The Books Are My Bag campaign in the UK is about to start. What do you carry your ebook reader around in?
So the Books Are My Bag campaign is under starter's orders in the UK. The media launch took place yesterday with the predictable assemblage of TV celebs (wish they didn't have to be dragged into everything!) for this pro-bookshop campaign which begins officially on 14th September. The brainchild of Maurice Saatchi, it will see tens of thousands of specially designed book bags being given away by bookshops. They've been provided free to the shops by the Booksellers Association.
Bookshops are facing a number of challenges these days from online booksellers, more alternatives to reading books as a means of filling spare time, economic conditions and so on, and yes, from ebooks and indie authors too. So they're having to give themselves a boost with this campaign. And fair enough. I enjoy browsing in bookshops as much as any other Kindle owner I'm sure, and would hate to see them disappear, but ebooks are here to stay and publishers and booksellers have to allow for them and not just see them as public enemy number 1. They need to evolve to accommodate them in the landscape.
So, these jolly orange-printed bags will be hitting the streets from Saturday. Well, ebooks deserve nice bags too. OK, they're really going to be ereader bags. Here's my snazzy Kindle bag that my daughter made for me.
What do you carry your ereader around in? Send your photos to me at ebookbag@ebook-ed.it and there'll be a prize for one entrant drawn at random on 14th September.
